Hacking Growth How Todays Fastest-Growing Companies Drive Breakout Success By Sean Ellis and Morgan BrownSince being coined in 2010 , growth hacking has become standard terminology far beyond the world of startups. Unfortunately, all that growth (pun intended) has led to misunderstandings about exactly what growth hacking is. Perhaps most dangerous among themyths is that growth hacking is a silver bullet that relies on breathtaking moments of sudden insight.Written by the man who coined the term, along with GrowthHackers.coms cofounder Morgan Brown, Hacking Growth is one part methodology and one part playbook. After dispelling numerous myths surrounding growth hacking, the authors work through case study after case study, many of which they were involved in firsthand. The book delivers a comprehensive approach to what is often little more than a buzzword.Best LessonGrowth hacking provides a rigorous methodology for driving the discovery of opportunities through collaboration across functions and at a rapid-fire pace. It insists upon data-driven analysis and experimentation, providing the answer for how companies can systematically tap the power of the wealth of data they have invested so heavily in accumulating.6. The Road to Recognition The A-to-Z Guide to Personal Branding for Accelerating Your Professional Success in The Age of Digital MediaBy Seth Price and Barry FeldmanMuch like growth hacking, the phrase personal branding often creates more heat than light. Its ubiquitous, buzz-worthy, and vapid. That usual emptiness is precisely what makes The Road to Recognition stand out In it, digital marketing pioneers Seth Price and Barry Feldman break personal branding into 26 lessons. Each lesson A for Authenticity, H for Helping, Z for Zeal, etc. contains key definitions, a direct contribution from one of businesss most recognizable names, and a plan of action. The result is a blow-by-blow account of how to launch, sustain, and promote the brand that matters most you.Best Lesson Everyone loves a good listener. Identify the questions your audience seeks answers to. Ask questions. Ask people t o tell you their stories. Ask for their ideas. And listen closely.7. The Undoing Project A Friendship That Changed Our MindsBy Michael LewisTechnically released in December of 2016, The Undoing Project is such an unlikely and powerful book that I couldnt help but include it.Michael Lewis, author of Moneyball, The Big Short, and The Blind Side, chronicles the 30-plus-year friendship of Nobel Prize-winning psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky. Both Israeli citizens, Kahneman and Tversky pioneered the field known today as behavioral economics. For covering such a seemingly dry subject, the book packs more than an intellectual punch. Kahneman and Tverskys relationship, which Lewis likens to a marriage, faced good times and bad. Beyond their massive contributions to the science of human decision-making, cognitive biases, and mental heuristics, emotions shine through. Without spoiling the ending, let me sayThe Undoing Projects two final chapters had me in tears. No small feat for the story of the birth of an academic disciplineBest Lesson That was the moment I gave up on decision analysis, said Danny. No one ever made a decision because of a number. They need a story. People did not choose between things. They chose between descriptions of things. Economists, and anyone else who wanted to believe that human beings were rational, could rationalize, or try to rationalize, loss aversion. But how did you rationalize this?Self-reflection is a double-edged sword. Although critical to growth, its easy to let this discipline become mired in self-congratulation or self-pity. What we need is a little help.Whether youre struggling with personal adversity or professional branding, longing to understand the human mind, or just in need of a crash course on life, the list above offers the help youre looking for.As the American academic Charles William Eliot put it, Books are the quietest and most constant of friends they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, a nd the most patient of teachers.Just be sure to choose your friends wisely.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Aaron Orendorff is the founder of iconiContent and a regular contributor at Entrepreneur, Lifehacker, Fast Company, Business Insider, and more. 4 Tips to Be an Assertive Job Seeker

4 Tips to Be an Assertive Job binnenseeker4 Tips to Be an Assertive Job SeekerWhen you boil job searching down, the whole experience looks a lot like this you go after what you want and explain why you, in fact, deserve it.Lets face it- that can be intimidating for anyone, but especially if youre someone who doesnt consider yourself to be naturally assertive or self-assured.But, when its up to you to point out all of the reasons youre worthy of that job youre so eager to land, you dont really have a choice but to hold your chin high, take a deep breath, and prove that youre in the right spot.Sound impossible? We promise, its not. Here are four tips to help you be a more assertive job seeker, even if your personality is the exact opposite1. Know your value.Feeling confident when youre on the hund for a new gig can be challenging. However, it becomes a whole lot easier if you have a solid grasp on all of those positive things and beneficial qualities that you bring to the table. Before d oing anything else in your job search, sit down and list out all of those competencies that make you qualified for the types of roles you want. Maybe youre a total Excel whiz or perhaps you pride yourself on your ability to build relationships and close sales. Write it all down- and then make sure you incorporate those things into all of your materials, from your resume to your LinkedIn profile.By developing your own value proposition before applying for another single job, youll bolster your confidence and remind yourself that youre more than deserving of a great position- which will help you be a little more assertive and self-assured when your next interview rolls around.2. Skip the mushy language. What are some qualities of people who are assertive? Theyre confident, theyre direct, and theyre well-spoken. For that reason, youll want to cut out as much soft language from your vocabulary as possible. What do we mean by soft language? Things like sort of, kind of, and might fit the b ill. These words serve to weaken your message- especially in an interview situation- and make you appear as if youre filled with uncertainty. For example, instead of sayingI sort of have some Photoshop experience from a team project that I worked onYou would say something likeYes, I do have some Photoshop experience, mostly from when I worked on an updated marketing brochure in my last position.See what a difference that makes? Make a conscious effort to speak in a clear and direct way, and youll come off as far more decisive.3. Leverage your network.Being assertive in your job search doesnt always have to look like puffing up your chest and never letting a hiring manager see you sweat. Assertiveness can also involve enlisting other people to help in your quest for a new role.Send personalized emails to some of your contacts to let them know the type of position youre looking for and request that they let you know if they hear of something. Or, if you have an acquaintance who works i n your desired field, ask if you could take her out for coffee and find out about her own unique experience.Put simply, assertiveness involves proactively going after the things you want- and, theres no shame in relying on your network to help you do that. In fact, its smart.4. Be honest with yourself. When youre actively job searching, youre going to have to put yourself in some situations that make you a little uncomfortable- its just part of the process (hey, nobody feels totally confident in a job interview). However, dont confuse this idea of being assertive with needing to maintain a facade that isnt at all true to you. Yes, there are some things you can and should do to really put yourself out there and work toward getting the sort of job you know you deserve, but authenticity is still important. In the end, being true to yourself and what you know you want out of your next opportunity will make you far more confident than any other tip or hack. Plus, that honesty will also help you find the right job and the right company that values you for exactly who you are.Start Your Job Search

How to Explain an Employment Gap on Your Resume

How to Explain an Employment Gap on Your ResumeHow to Explain an Employment Gap on Your ResumeMany of us take time off, for one reason or another, from working. Sometimes, its by choice- maybe you were raising a child, traveling, taking care of a sick relative, or went back to school. In other cases, your time off from work may occur because you were laid off or fired and it took time to find a new job. What is the best way to explain an employment gap on your resume and during a job interview? It depends on the situation and what you did while you werent employed. Do You Need to Mention a Gap on Your Resume? If you havent taken a break yet, you can plan it carefully to ensure a smooth return to the workforce. If the gap was in the past, and youve been employed since it occurred, you dont need to call it out on your resume. There is no requirement that you include all your experience on a resume. Thats especially true if youve been in the workforce for many years. If you are look ing for a mid-career position, an entry level role from decades ago is probably not very relevant. It is, however, very important not to lie on your resume - about an employment gap or anything else.If you lie on your resume, it will probably come back to haunt you. Employersverify work history, and if you put incorrect information on your resume, itll be discovered. 4 Ways to Make Employment Gaps Less Obvious on a Resume 1. Use Dates to Cover up the Gap Whenlisting dates on your resume, you dont need to list the month/year if you were in a position for over a year or if your position spans multiple years. For example, you could say 2015 - 2017 (rather than May 2015 - August 2017) for a position. Then, if your next job began in November 2017, you can list it as 2017 - Present, which makes the nine-month employment gap less obvious. Heres an example of how that can look Store Manager, XYZ Store2017 - PresentSales Associate, ABC Store2015 2017 ExpandAs you can see, the resume does nt specifically say when the candidate started and ended employment, which can cover a brief employment gap. However, if youre filling out a job application youll need to be more specific. Youll also fruchtwein likely be asked about the dates during a job interview, so be prepared to answer accurately. 2. Consider a Different Resume Format You canformat your resumeto minimize the visibility of gaps in youremployment history. For example, you can put the dates in plain font instead of bold. Or, you can use a smaller font than the one youre using for the company name and your job title. Start your resume with asummary statement and career highlightssection, so you are highlighting your skills and accomplishments, rather than when you did what. These small design and formatting choices can make a big difference. 3. Omit a Job (or Two) on Your Resume You dont need to include all your experience on your resume, especially if you have been in the workforce for years. Its acceptable to limi t theyears of experience you include on your resumeto fifteen years when seeking a managerial or professional position and ten years when looking for other positions. 4. Include Other Experience Gained During the Gap What did you do while you werent employed? Did you freelance or consult? Take a sabbatical? How about volunteering? All those experiences count as work and can be included on your resume. List them as you would list your other jobs - with job title, company name, job description, and dates of employment. If you took a class, you could list thatin the education sectionof your resume. If you participated in a gap year experience, that information could be include on your resume as well. Explaining an Employment Gap During a Job Interview Explaining a gap in employment during an interview can be tricky. The best approach is usually to address the issue in a direct and forthright manner. Provide a clear rationale for taking time off if the break was voluntary. If you to ok time off to deal with a particular issue like caring for a sick relative or completing coursework and are ready to return tofull-time employment, make it clear that the reason for your time off from the workforce has been resolved. If you were laid off due to a workforce contraction, it would be important to provide any evidence of strong performance as you explain the circumstances surrounding the downsizing. Whenever possible, secure recommendations from supervisors, colleagues, and customers confirming your competence. Incorporate these into yourLinkedIn profilewhen feasible. Of course, it will be more difficult to make a strong case if you were fired due to performance issues. If you are now targeting a job that requiresdifferent skillsor competencies, then you might emphasize how your strengths are better suited for the job at hand. If you have taken action to correct any problems which lumineszenzdiode to your dismissal, you should mention the steps you have takento strengt hen your abilities. You should generally avoid any negative characterization of your former employer since many prospective employers would take the employers side. A proactive approach providing evidence of your competence, and any positive recommendations from previous jobs can be helpful. Emphasize the Positive There are ways you can almost seamlesslyreturn to work after a career break. Make sure that you emphasize any constructive activities during your gap period suchas volunteer work, workshops or coursework, consulting or freelance work. Finally, exude enthusiasm for returning to work and make a very strong case for why your target job would be exciting for you and an excellent fit.

10 Ways to Be a Leader at Work When Youre Not the Boss

10 Ways to Be a Leader at Work When Youre Not the Boss 10 Ways to Be a Leader at Work When Youre Not the Boss When founders and CEOs look to hire and promote managers, they want people who exhibit leadership. But how can you exhibit leadership if you’re stuck in individual contributor roles? No one reports to you, and you’re not even a project manager. Good news is, leader isn’t a title, it’s a group of characteristics, and you can acquire them, even if you’re not the boss. Here are 10 ideas: 1. Communicate Clearly Leaders don’t grumble behind closed doors when things don’t go their way. They don’t say yes when they should have said no. They say what they mean and do so in a way that people understand. This is not advocating rudeness, but it is advocating dropping passive-aggressive behavior. 2. Learn Flexibility There’s rarely a “right” way to do something. If you are going to insist that things be done a certain way, you’re headed down the micromanager path, and that’s not what leadership is about. Ask yourself, “Is this the wrong way to do it, or is it just a different way?” 3. Don’t Be a Doormat Leaders stand up for themselves, politely. Jerks stand up for themselves rudely. If somebody interrupts you in a meeting, simply say, “I’m sorry, can I finish?” If your slimy co-worker tries to dump her work on you say, “That won’t be possible.” Does this mean you never do a favor? Absolutely not. You do do favors, but you do so because you are nice or because it benefits you and the company, not because you can’t say no. 4. Help Others Leaders bring others along with them and share credit for work well done. Leaders don’t look for opportunities to step on others, but rather look for opportunities to help others succeed. Remember, a leader is someone who demonstrates desirable characteristics. 5. Take Responsibility for Your Mistakes We all make mistakes. Own your mistakes. When someone points out an error, don’t start throwing blame, simply say, “Thanks for letting me know. Let me fix that.” Additionally, when things start going south, ask for help rather than panicking and trying to fix everything on your own. That usually makes it worse. 6. Listen to Others’ Ideas You may be bursting with ideas and can’t wait until it’s your turn on the stage, but take time to listen to others. Other people have great ideas as well, and a true leader acknowledges that good things can come from many sources. Don’t cut people off. Do solicit ideas. You may be surprised at what you learn. 7. Take Risks Lots of times, people think leaders have led charmed lives where everything went well. This is rarely the case. Failure is an integral part of success. When you can acknowledge that the risks are real but the potential payoff is enough to counteract that, you’re demonstrating leadership. If you jump blindly, that’s stupid. But if you evaluate the situation and take the risk anyway, that’s leadership. 8. Remember to Network Networking isn’t just about finding jobs, it’s about connecting with people. As you learn how to interact with people, you’ll learn which interactions are effective and which are ineffective. As you help others with their career, you’re demonstrating your ability to lead and guide. 9. Develop a Thick Skin Illegal and immoral discrimination happens. Accept that it does now, and just determine not to let terrible people get you down. The business world is not the university, and the HR department are not counselors. If someone treats you poorly, don’t immediately jump to the conclusion that it was based on some immutable characteristic. Instead, evaluate if what they said or did was justified. If it was, change your behavior. If it wasn’t, don’t let it bother you. Now, in an egregious situation, absolutely report it, but let most things roll off your back. 10. Don’t Ask for Special Treatment All that stuff you learned about being inherently special? False. You’re not. I’m not. No one is. So stop asking for special treatment and exceptions to rules. Now, can you become special by working harder and smarter than everyone else? You’ll get special treatment when you deserve it. That isn’t to say you can’t ask for a raise or a promotion for extra behavior. That’s not special treatment- that’s something you earn by being awesome. The source of our dissatisfaction

The source of our dissatisfaction The source of our dissatisfaction Ludwig Wittgenstein  was a genius like few others. Born into one of the wealthiest families of his time, he donated his fortune and instead went on to become one of the giants of 20th-century philosophy. He was commanding and passionate and, quite often, misunderstood. As his friend Georg Henrik von Wright  recalled  in a conversation about him:Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!“He once said he felt as though he was writing for people who would think in a different way, breathe a different air of life, from that of present-day men.”Given that his primary subject was the philosophy of language, which is notoriously messy and contradictory (in no small part due to Wittgenstein’s influence), this likely isn’t the biggest of surprises. But more so than perhaps other philosophers, as much fascination as critics and historians take in his work, they also find much appeal in h ow he lived.Beyond growing up wealthy, he was mentored by the great Bertrand Russell, he once stepped away from philosophy to teach in primary schools in Austria, he was an officer on the front lines of the First World War, and he once again left philosophy to help out in the Second World War.There little doubt that these experiences shaped his views on life, too. At 27, for example, when he was fighting in the First World War, he wrote some thoughts in his  notebook  that partially illuminate his later  belief  that  life (and philosophy) wasn’t about made-up problems but about living. This is illustrated by one of the most striking passages he ever penned:“Only  a man who lives not in time but in the present is happy.  For life in the present there is no death.  Death is not an event in life.  It is not a fact of the world. If by  eternity is understood not infinite temporal duration but non-temporality, then it can be said that  a  man  lives eternally if he lives in the prese nt.”The Problem of Indulging StorificationHuman beings are storytellers.  We don’t see or observe things as they are but we impose a narrative line on the events in our life to add order to them.Like all great stories, our stories, too, have a beginning, a middle, and an end. It creates  the  illusion that we are living in the temporal duration, as Wittgenstein called it - one that exists in the flow of time. There are theories in both philosophy and in physics that  suggest that  this flow of time is a blurring in our  perception  that stops us from seeing reality as it is  - that time doesn’t exist  - but we can look to an even simpler line of reasoning to understand Wittgenstein’s point.Given that we are the  omniscient  narrators of life, we trust that the existence of the past and the future is as real as the existence of the present.  After all, our imagination allows us to both see the past and envision the future. We can look back on regrets, and we can construct a world in which we are not alive or happy or successful or fulfilled or (input a different desire here) even though  both of these are abstractions that concern us with a made-up internal world with all its problems while ignoring the real, outer world.Any lack of satisfaction we experience in life is born from this predicament:  We are so attached to an imagined inner story about who we are, causing both anxiety and fear, that we forget  that  the world in front of us isn’t at all dictated by this story; it simply  is, in both its beauty and its simplicity. The biggest problem, however, is that  this outer world (that is only truly experienced in the present),  while stunning and complete if attention is paid to it, is also - in a way -  empty and silent and, sometimes, lonely. What, then, do we do? We create an imaginary friend in our mind to continue telling us the story about this and about that.  Think of how often, when by yourself, you are simply  there  in a particular mome nt rather than stuck in a loop of thought dominated by a voice in your head that keeps you company. It’s likely not very often. While this voice can bring with it occasional pleasantries, like a treasured memory or a meaningful daydream, most of the time, what it does is make us feel self-conscious and insecure, stressed and fearful. In the present, none of these things exist because none of these things are real.  What exists is simply your environment and what it has to offer.  And often,  what it has to offer is far more important than a false narrative. There is nothing but now, and in that now, there is rarely dissatisfaction.Death as a Means to Eternal  LifeWhen you think about it, contrary to Wittgenstein’s reasoning,  being truly, utterly present is a form of death.  It means that you have to  kill the voice that tells the story in your mind  - a voice many of us are intimately attached  to.At the same time, however, Wittgenstein is right:  There is no such thing as real, tangible death that happens in our life; and because this death doesn’t happen, neither are many of our future anxieties (which are often directly and indirectly influenced by a fear of death)  based in any objective reality;  there is only the death of the narrator. When you don’t live linearly in time, or in non-temporality as Wittgenstein termed it, then there is just a universe of change.  This universe doesn’t bother drawing artificial boundaries that distinguish between our idea of past and future, nor is it concerned with what we call life and death.  It just moves and acts according to processes that govern it, turning from one state to another. This alteration of states is something that we are a part of, and this something can be loosely termed the eternal, as Wittgenstein also referred to it.Unfortunately,  until we stop the narration, this eternity passes by us every waking moment without us noticing.  Instead of seeing ourselves as a dance of this majestic process, one that isn’t defined by made-up problems, we revert into the company of the voice we are too scared to detach ourselves from. But the truth is that the only way to get out of the cycle of dissatisfaction is to first  accept the death of this voice  and sacrifice its company so that it no longer blocks us from the actual reality. This is, of course, not easy, and for most people,  always keeping the voice quiet is a skill that lies beyond feasibility.  That said,  everyone can do a little more to at least pay attention to the right things  when the reminder strikes rather than taking the easy way out. It’s been commonly noted in psychology research that  humans report the highest satisfaction when they are completely lost in some activity around them rather than in the imagined struggle that goes on in their mind. When they are in harmony with the universe as it continues to transition, they are able to look beyond the incomplete stories constructed by their mind to fully engage wi th the real story that is unfolding all around them. What  is important and eternal is in front of us, but to really connect with it, we need to  sacrifice the comfort of our imagination. The TakeawayThe truth be told, this is a taxing way of saying what we have all already heard or realized at one point or another:  We  should be more present.Do the lives that many of us lead, with our jobs and our daily demands, make this easy? Of course  not.  Modern societies are designed to compromise now for tomorrow, and the choice has already been made for us.Nonetheless, many of us can do more than we currently do - we can make a greater effort to  live in the real world  rather than the narrated one  because it’s ultimately the latter that is the cause of the problems that dissatisfy us.By  occasionally welcoming the death of the voice we so closely associate with, we can,  paradoxically, live beyond death, and we can experience the change and the transitioning of the universe as it occur s around us in a way that is striking and meaningful and truly, utterly captivating.Wittgenstein’s conclusion was that philosophy had spent so much time making up its own problems that it got  detached from the only problem that truly mattered -  the problem of being and living. We, too, are habituated from birth to do this.  We make up things in our mind, we add coherence and reason to what we make up, and we  then spend so much time living there that we forget that none of it is grounded on a solid foundation  - that we are looking in the wrong direction. It’s often been  said  that  what we most want we already have.  This couldn’t be truer when it comes to living in what we think of as the flow of time.We are not here to run from one illusionary problem to another; we are here to see, and experience, and love, and trust what is present - right now. This article first appeared on DesignLuck.com.

ASME Conformity Assessment Videos Now Available on ASME.org ASME Conformity Assessment Videos Now Available on ASME.org ASME Conformity Assessment Videos Now Available on ASME.org During the past year, ASME Standards Certification (SC) has produced eight videos detailing various aspects of the Societys Conformity Assessment program. The latest video, Demand The Mark Heres Why, was recently added to the library of SC videos, which are currently available on ASME.org. In the new video, members of the ASME Conformity Assessment community including ASME staff members Paul Lang, director of Product and Personnel Certification, and Jon Labrador, managing director of Conformity Assessment discuss the ASME Single Certification Mark and why businesses and regulators throughout the world recognize The Mark as a symbol of safety and quality for parts and products. The ASME Mark is a statement of confidence that all code requirements have been met in the construction or fabrication of that part or piece of equipment, Labrador explains in the video. Otherwise youre going to potentially introduce risk. When you have a pressure vessel item that has the stamp on it, I can know the genesis of that entire vessel, adds Lang. If I get a vessel that has no stamp on it, I have no idea how that vessel was manufactured. The new video joins seven other video clips in the Conformity Assessment video library on ASME.org, which include a six-minute overview of the ASME Conformity Assessment process and videos that address such topics as what ASME Conformity Assessment is, why third-party oversight is important, how ASME Conformity Assessment gives businesses a competitive edge and why it is important to certify the supply chain. Thermal Management Irresistible to Ashish Sinha

Thermal Management Irresistible to Ashish Sinha Thermal Management Irresistible to Ashish Sinha Thermal Management Irresistible to Ashish Sinha By Carol Milano > As a teenager, Ashish Sinha read about heat in his physics textbook. Looking for a chapter on cold, he couldnt find one. Eventually, I figured out that cold was the absence of heat, he recalls. That was his first encounter with thermal sciences. His professional goal emerged at the Indian institute of Technology: he wrote his thesis on boiling heat transfer, while earning a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ashish realized hed like to keep studying heat transfer and thermal sciences, in a doctoral program. At Georgia Tech, he specialized in thermal management of electronics, which deals with the art of cooling electronic components. I knew society would always need a person with this skill. Something is always getting hot and needs to be cooled, he observes. Thermal management, a fast-growing area, brings constant challenges. The problem is much more pronounced in electronic cooling. People do more and more on handheld devices, which dont have enough space for cooling technology, Ashish explains. Everythings getting smaller. Chips are more powerful. That leaves fewer ways to drive the heat out. While pursuing his Thermal Management PhD, Ashish taught undergraduate AutoCAD and engineering drawing classes for three semesters, becoming mentor and instructor to 240 students. As a graduate research assistant, he worked on adapting an adsorption chiller for electronic cooling in blistering environments. He was a research engineer there on a project aimed at developing a novel cooling device (or heat sink) for high wattage processors. We tried to improve on the standard heat transfer method, by bringing liquid cooling into the spaces of a laptop or server. I attempted to replace the heat pipe with water, by creating a closed-loop flow circuit to transport heat form processors to radiator fins think of a car radiator miniaturized to cool a computer chip. Ashish and his collaborators, Georgia Tech Professor Yogendra Joshi and Ven Holalkere, a former Thermal Manager at Intel, decided to commercialize the modular liquid cooling technology. After securing start-up funding, they launched Cool Clouds in 2010. Initially, Georgia Techs Advanced Technology Development Center provided office space. Being involved with a company from scratch, you have a 360-degree view: how it begins, how to survive on a shoestring budget, says Ashish, who is responsible for research and development. From the start, youre involved with customers, and going to the post office, and taking out the trash. Your attachment to the company is stronger at a small business. As Principal Scientist, I see the direct impact of my work: how a customer reacts when they see the product, a closed-loop cooling device. You wouldnt have that working at a large company. At a small start-up, everything you do has to be on the money! We each have to be everything: tech guy, mail guy, sales guy. Launching a business is unpredictable, Ashish admits. You must not fear the unknown! Youre experimenting with something you couldnt do otherwise. For me, being able to explore more has made me stronger and more-self-confident. Im not afraid of facing the unknown anymore. Cool Clouds is now headquartered in San Jose, with a staff of five. Although running a small company is demanding and typically requires long hours, Ashish is glad he has time to spend with his wife, and playing with his year-old son. He joined ASMEs Atlanta section in 2006, serving as chair from 2012 to 2013. I had the idea of taking the chapter to a new nuclear plant, at Vogtle, Georgia. It turned out to be exciting for everyone! On a weekday, over 30 people came, he reports. I got the feeling that I could bring a new idea to fruition. Being involved with ASME, or other volunteer organizations, is an opportunity to try new things, without fear of failure. As an ECLIPSE intern (2014-15) with the Board of Governors, he helped arrange ASME training materials into user-friendly format that benefits future volunteers, so they can become strong contributors as ASME members. At Cool Clouds, hes learned, both employers and clients look for well-rounded individuals. To get ahead, You need tech skills, and you also have to make good PowerPoint slides, Ashish reflects. Youre trying to get your ideas across and show that your product is better. Questions always come up. Its a disadvantage if you dont communicate and interact well. For younger engineers, Being able to take initiative is great! Dont just follow tradition; try to find new ways to do things. Always question, Ashish recommends. Being inquisitive is a big plus thats what drives innovation. And innovation is what drives todays economy.

Are you spray painting the red flags hot pink A few ways to know

Are you spray painting the red flags hot pink A few ways to know Are you spray painting the red flags hot pink A few ways to know There’s not a soul on this planet that gets it right all of the time. It doesn’t matter how intuitive, cautious, insightful, or clairvoyant you are. There’s a wild amount of unknown in the choices of our daily lives. Which means … you’re going to get it wrong. You’re going to do it wrong. You’re going to decide wrong. You’re going to take thousands of wrong turns in your life. But … some of those can be avoided. Not every wrong choice is a bad, wrong choice. There’s two buckets of wrong choices, if you will. There’s the ones we made with all of the best information we had at the time. And then there’s the ones that we chose to make even though we knew better. Like way better. But we didn’t want to face it, or acknowledge it, or use our voice, or ask for more clarity, or push for more of what we thought was right. So instead, we justified the decision despite all of the information around trying to gently nudge us back to our own knowledge. And what no one ackno wledges is how scary and lonesome and sometimes upsetting making the right decision will be. The right one, the one that goes with the knowledge we know to be true, the one that sees the red flags and follows their urging, can be as painful as it is right. Otherwise, you would have just done it to begin with. Right isn’t always easy, which is why you get so committed to spray painting the heck out of those red flags until they’re neon with pink.Looking back, you’ll always know that’s exactly what you did. But what matters is knowing why you did it and what you were scared of. And importantly, how to keep the pink spray paint in the cupboard. I’ve found in my own life, anytime there’s a situation where my gut was screaming but I ignored it and made the situation as right as I wanted to make it, the universe would hand me a blow up in order to get me back on the path. And trust me, you don’t want that blow up. It feels like way more of a category-five breakdown. If you’ re not sure whether they’re red flags, or red flags that you’ve covered with pink, take inventory:Are your friends tip-toeing around advice? You know. But you don’t want to know. Try asking them straight, “What do you really, truly think?” But be ready for the answers. And only ask this of people you deeply, genuinely trust. It might be a truth you can’t unhear.Ask yourself what you’re scared of. … You might find that when you can honor your fear, you can let go of the delusion you’ve created for yourself and just face the red flag.Ask how well the situation is working for you… Your answer may surprise you. You can stop trying to make certain paths work for you. And instead choose the path that’s actually bound to work. Even if it’s scary. If a situation is tricky, unknown, or unsure, it’s OK. It doesn’t mean that it’s not the right path. Often, the right paths are hard as hell. But you don’t want to be making certain choices harder than they need to b e by ignoring your gut and ignoring your truth. Red flags are OK, they’re pointing you to the celebratory flags of a path of magic. Ones that are actually hot pink. This article was originally posted on MaxieMcCoy.com.

How to Make Your Résumé a Diamond in the Rough

How to Make Your Résumé a Diamond in the Rough How to Make Your Résumé a Diamond in the Rough What's a surefire way to have your résumé thrown aside within seconds of an employer reading it? Including overused, common phrases and words to describe yourself. Employers see this too often to make a positive impression. When you use such descriptions, you are saying absolutely nothing important or interesting about you. Almost everyone says these things in résumés, which is the whole problem. If you want to be seen as unique and get called in for an interview, avoid those phrases at all costs. Here are several ways to make sure your résumé is a shining star in a pile of monotony: Let go of the objective. The Oxford dictionary defines "objective" as "a thing aimed at or sought; a goal." You may wish to work for someone who cares what your goal is, but that is highly unlikely to happen. Take a look at the following example: "Seeking a challenging position that allows me to use my communications, problem-solving and marketing skills." Here's what you can learn about the applicant from this statement:He wants a challenging role.He has communications, problem-solving and marketing skills. From an employer's perspective, she has seen statements like this so many times that they've become stale. Most people say they want to be challenged, and "communications" is a broad word. What types of communication is he good at â€" written, oral, corporate communications, crisis communications, conflict resolution? "Problem solving" is another widely used term. What kinds of problems is he adept at solving â€" analytical, social, strategic? "Marketing skills" is also vague. What type of marketing is he talking about â€" mass marketing, graphic design, copy? If you are not specific, you are not helping the employer achieve her goal, which is to fill the role with a talented candidate. In other words, she wants to know if you can satisfy her objective, not your own. Whether you agree with this or not, it is the reality today as companies receive tons of applications, so you need to change your objective statement into a career profile or summary. Get specific in your summary. Read the following statement, and think about what you've learned about the candidate:  "Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, fluid environment and quickly contributes value." If true, you can assume this person is:a self-startersomeone who thrives in fast-paced environmentsa person who quickly contributes value Unfortunately, many people claim to be self-starters, thrive in challenging environments and contribute value. The question is how you can make this statement unique and personal.  The answer is making  examples  your best friend. If you are always telling an employer words and phrases to describe you, she doesn't get much from it. You need to show it, which means you need to use examples. How can you prove these things? Think about an instance or two when you demonstrated certain characteristics at school or on the job.Replace the overused words and phrases with these examples. Here's a sample of what it might look like:  "Initiated development and implementation of a new online training program in six weeks, staying within budget."  What have you learned from reading this? The person is a self-starter.The person can accomplish a major task in a short time frame. The person made a valuable contribution and saved company resources. Which candidate would you choose to interview? Don't use your job description as your résumé bullets. This is a big mistake that lots of people make. Job descriptions rarely encompass everything you do, and most are by nature very generic. You are not doing yourself any favors by copying your job description into your résumé. Your bullets need to tell the story of exactly what you've achieved in your job, both inside and outside the scope of your formal job responsibilities. (Use those examples above to help with this step.) Don't let stale phrasing and wording prevent you from getting called for interviews. Phrases such as "dedicated team player," "well-organized and committed," and "results-oriented" are used too frequently. If something sounds bad to you, it probably sounds even worse to an employer who reads a lot of résumés that sound exactly the same. Do yourself a favor and incorporate specific examples to demonstrate why you have the characteristics you say you do. That kind of  résumé  will be unique and stand out to a potential employer. A vague, cliched version is simply going to be glanced at and tossed aside. Don't let that be you. How a month of paternity leave turned me into a competent dad

How a month of paternity leave turned me into a competent dad How a month of paternity leave turned me into a competent dad The following story was submitted by a Fatherly reader. Opinions expressed in the story do not reflect the opinions of Fatherly as a publication. The fact that we’re printing the story does, however, reflect a belief that it is an interesting and worthwhile read.Like many dads, I didn’t start out with the most nurturing, or patient, approach to fatherhood. From day one, I loved the tiny person crying in my arms, but try as I might, I couldn’t please her. And the frustration of struggling at parenting was suffocating. In time, I found myself talking to her less like my child and more like the belligerent patron at a crowded bar.Have you figured out what you want yet? No? Ma’am, there’s no need to shout. My wife, on the other hand, had the opposite parenting experience. From the get-go, she knew exactly what needed to be done in almost every situation ? from feeding, to soothing, to sleeping. In fact, she was so much better at getting our little girl to sleep that it became her gig. And that set a terrible precedent. Whenever something became too hard in those early days, I let my wife pick up the slack. Clearly, she had some sort of evolutionary knack for all of this, so if I couldn’t solve the problem, “Aw shucks, here ya go mom!”I’ve talked to a lot of fathers who admit they fell into this same trap. Many dads are still in it. They figure, “Hey, I mow the lawn and make sure the right batteries are in all of the remotes; I pull my weight around here.” It’s a nice bit of delusion that’s only exacerbated by a sleep-deprived brain. I embraced this faulty logic for a solid two months. I took the backseat every opportunity I got. And w hile the guilt of not helping clawed at me, the extra bit of sleep helped. But it was all temporary. See, I’d made an important commitment long before I knew how hard it would be to care for a newborn. I had filed all of the paperwork and cleared my appointments. At the end of my wife’s maternity leave, I would take over. For a whole month, I was going on paternity leave. And I was definitely starting to question my decision. The week before we made the switch I was a wreck. I looked at my now 15-pound baby girl like she was a ticking time bomb. I knew she was just waiting to go off and, of course, would do so on my watch. An infected cat scratch? An unforeseen formula allergy? Her first bout of colic? A cold? Pneumonia? I was wholly unprepared for any one of these events but had enough sense to keep the fear to myself. As useless as I’d been up to that point, I couldn’t also be seen as a whiner. The day came and the door shut behind my wife. My baby and I were alone. And almos t immediately she began to cry. The hairs on my neck stood at attention. My heart rate doubled. I’m sure there was a look of panic on my face. But I stayed cool and soothed my little girl, and before I knew it there was calm. For days, it went like this; moments of abject horror followed by total, glorious, quiet. It was a whole lot of hell… and a little bit of heaven. Then slightly less hell. And even less…As we rolled into our second week, my little belligerent bar patron was becoming more like a high-tipping regular. The lows were still very low … but the highs were more than enough to make up for the trouble. When my wife returned home from work in the evenings, suddenly I wasn’t so quick to hand over our little one. Just the opposite. “You can go upstairs and change, I’ve got her,” I would say without hesitation. (Statements like this, by the way, may have actually saved me from having my personal effects thrown out on the curb.)By the time my paternity leave en ded (too soon, I might add), I was starting to feel like an old pro. I could swaddle with the best of them. I knew, down to the second, how long the bottles needed to be heated. I had learned parenting tricks that even my wife didn’t know. It felt good. And I was beginning to register that the clichés were true ? my daughter really was growing up before my eyes. She was noticeably different from when we started our month together. So was I. And I’d determined over the course of the month that the back seat was no place for me when it came to raising her. The view was far better up front.Alex Moschina is a Baltimore-based writer who enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and daughter. This article first appeared on Fatherly.
